How To Do a Fresh Install of Windows 8.1 Pro

This article will show you how to do a fresh install of Windows 8.1 pro. Doing a fresh install is necessary when you buy a new operating system, but it is also sometimes recommended when your computer is infected with very bad malware or bloatware, that just cannot be removed by other means.

First thing’s first

Backup everything you want to keep, files, music, movies, etc. Everything will get deleted during the fresh install process. If you want to keep your data physically, you should get a USB or spare hard drive. If you do not mind keeping important files on the cloud, you may want to make use of services like Dropbox and OneDrive to back up your important files.

Getting a product key

Whether you are reinstalling an already purchased copy of Windows or doing a fresh install of Windows 8.1 you are going to need to find your product key that is attached to every copy of Windows.

If you purchased Windows 8.1, the product key will be easily found in your confirmation email that you got when you buy Windows 8.1, or on the physical media that the operating system is contained on.

If Windows 8.1 was already installed when you got your computer, look around for a sticker on your computer, which will have your product key printed on it.

Going forward

Once you have gotten your product key, you will need to get a USB or DVD with Windows 8.1 on it.

Put your USB or DVD into the computer. Once that is done all you need to do is boot your computer from either the USB or DVD.

In order to do this, simply insert the DVD or USB and then turn off the computer. Then restart your computer, and while the computer is booting up keep an eye out for a message along the lines of “press any key to boot from DVD” or “press any key to boot from USB.”

Do what the popups say

Once all that is done, a popup will come up asking what language you want to do the installation in, once you have chosen your language you will be asked to enter your product key. Do So.

You will then be presented with a license agreement, read it if you want, then click agree.

Now this part is important, you will be presented with two options, asking what type of installation you want: “upgrade” or “custom.” Choose custom. It is the option you want to choose when doing a fresh install of Windows 8.1 pro.

Your computer will then ask “where do you want to install Windows 8.1 on?” You will be given a list of “partitions” to choose from; delete all partitions that are currently displayed. Note that this will remove all of your data, so hopefully you backed everything important up.

Once you have deleted all the partitions you will only be given one place to install Windows 8.1 on your hard drive, it will be labeled “unallocated space.” Click on that and hit next.

After that, Windows does pretty much all the work, and you only need to tweak your settings and other personal options.
